Popraci Neukolln 2017: When we pushed rolls of Hay around Neukölln dressed with Black Metal war paint

Neukölln is a weird place in Berlin. At first glance, the neighborhood looks like a clash of cultures or, maybe, the future of Germany. But, in the back streets, you can find a glimpse of the past, and this is called Popraci, a hay roll race that has been happening for ten years yet most people don’t even know it exists. Fotostrasse got together with a few friends and put a team to race in this year Popraci Neukolln 2017, and here you can read everything about it. We have been following Popraci in Neukölln for a couple of...

A Visit to the beautiful Körnerpark in Neukölln

Generations of Berliners have been to Körnerpark, enjoying themselves in this oasis of peace in the midst of a hectic Neukölln. People go there to play football, to run, walk, relax, picnic and we do it too. In 2016, this Neukölln hidden gem celebrates its 100th year birthday and we are here to show you all why you need to go there and sing happy birthday to it. We found out about Körnerpark on the first few weeks after we moved to Neukölln, back in 2012. We saw a green rectangle on the map close to our house and decided...

Our visit to Schulenburg Park and its beautiful fountain in Neukölln

You can find the Von der Schulenburg Park in the southern part of Sonnenallee, in Neukölln. Known to the people who live around it as Schulenburg Park this green space in Berlin is one of the many hidden gems this city has that hide in plain sight. At least, this is how I felt when I, once again, cycled in front of the park and, finally, decided to see what is in there. And what I found was this beautiful green park filled with sycamore trees, ducks and a beautiful fountain that dominates the view of the park. The...

Neukölln Wind – A movie about a changing neighborhood

Imagine that you could find the spirit and the soul of a neighborhood. This is one of the themes behind Neukölln Wind, a movie about a changing neighborhood and how gentrification can change a place. Written and directed by Arsenny Rapoport whose life started in Kazakhstan, passed through Israel, Madrid, Naples and finally stopped in Berlin. With Berlin it was love at first sight, a place where he understood that everyone could be whatever it was possible. Neukölln was the neighborhood he felt especially inspired towards and where he decided to live. In 2012, he started filming and writing...

We Love Neukölln

We love Neukölln since we moved here in spring 2012. From that point on, our love for this neighborhood only grew and now it is pretty hard for us to imagine living anywhere else in Berlin. It is even crazy to think that, before we moved here, we knew nothing about this neighborhood. And I can still remember some of our friends telling us how dangerous Neukölln is and that you should never go south of Hermannplatz. They were wrong. They were so wrong. Feel like spending a few days Neukölln? You need to stay at the amazing Hüttenpalast...

Beef House – Taiwanese Food in Neukolln

Beef House is an authentic Taiwanese Restaurant in Neukölln. So authentic that we only knew about this place because some friends from Taiwan decided to show us the only place for taiwanese food  that they go when they are in Berlin. Yes, this is how great the food is at the Beef House. Don’t get confused by the name of this restaurant, this is not an american steak place. This is the place to try taiwanese noodle soup and some fried and cooked dumplings. The last time we were there, we had this big bowl of noodle soup and we are...

The Abandoned Hospital in Neukölln

We called this place the Abandoned Hospital in Neukölln but its official name is Verlassenes Frauen Krankenhaus. The complex of hospitals for children and women was built in parts, the first one was back in 1917, then it was expanded in 1969 and a new building for premature babies was built in 1978. Everything was going well for the Krankenhaus until 2005 when the complex was shut down and moved up the road to an even bigger complex. Now, this hospital lay abandoned in the middle of Neukölln. October 2016 Update: We’re in front of the hospital this morning...
