With their blog Lettering versus Calligraphy, Martina Flor and Giuseppe Salerno became famous in typography. There, they battle with individual letters in various styles and forms to show the similarities and differences between drawn and handwritten fonts.
We were at the Buchstabenmuseum for the opening of On the Wall – Lettering versus Calligraphy and took pictures of everything. And you can see them below.
As a designer who loves typography, I’m a big fan of what they do in Lettering versus Calligraphy. I tried to learn how Martina Flor does her lettering in a workshop during easter 2013, and there I realized that things are not that simple.
Martina Flor grew up in Buenos Aires and studied design in Barcelona before attending the Royal Art Academy in The Hague to study Type Design. And I thought I could become as good as her in a weekend. Silly me.
I am a big fan of Giuseppe Salerno; you can see lots of his artwork at my house. I met him in 2012 when he was hosting a calligraphy workshop at Betahaus, and every time he comes back to Berlin, we try to find time for some beers.
Giuseppe Salerno is the co-founder of Resistenza, together with Paco González, where they create typography and corporate identity projects. I really like to see how he can make it look so easy to do calligraphy. For me, what he does is close to magic.
