Since Marcela wrote about her travel photo gear, I wanted to write about my photography EDC, everyday carry for those of you not familiar with the term. I wanted to write about what I carry on my bag because, most of the times we are traveling and taking pictures, a lot of people wonder about the cameras I carry and how do I manage to carry all my stuff and some of Marcela’s things as well.

The main difference between what I carry and what Marcela carries is that she is focused on photography and I have no focus at all. Because of this lack of proper focus, I carry an Sony Action Camera and a Canon 7D at the same time that I carry a small analog camera. I know it is a lot of gear but I find ways of using them all in all of my travels.

But, lets stop with this and go straight to the point. I gonna start this with I normally carry for a day trip. This is what I normally have with me when I leave my hotel or my house early and I know I’m going to spend the entire day outside.

Photography EDC – This is some of the gear I carry inside my bag

Below you can see what I carry inside my main bag.

  1. I like to have quick access to some of my gear so I decided to attach some military styled pouches to my bag. The first one you see there is my favorite one. Felipe Tofani's Photography EDCMade by OneTigris, it has space for my iPhone, for extra batteries and even for a small notebook that sometimes I carry to write down where I was or to remember something.
  2. I always carry one of this universal tools with screw drivers and everything else. It is perfect for bike rides and for when something goes a little wrong and you have to try to fix it. This one I carry everywhere since it is pretty small and light and it makes my photography EDC a little bit better.
  3. When I decided to walk from Berlin to Poland a few years ago, one of the main problems I had was the fact that my old iPhone 4S couldn’t hold charge long enough. So, I bought the best battery pack I could find and this Anker is it. It has dual USB ports that makes it easy for me to charge my cellphone and Marcela’s at the same time. It has 15000mAh of power that is more than enough to charge my iPhone more than 5 times and it comes with a small flashlight!Felipe Tofani's Photography EDC
  4. Like I said before, I like to have quick access to some of my gear and this is why I have some pushes attached to my main bag. This small one is where I keep my universal tool kit and my action camera.Felipe Tofani's Photography EDC Sometimes I keep some pens there as well since every time you need a pen, you never have one. I decided to fix this by carrying one everywhere.
  5. Since I have a lot of stuff on me all the time, I didn’t want to carry my camera on my neck like everybody. I want to avoid having straps getting tangled up and this is why I decided to go for this bright green wrist strap. It frees my neck for everything and it makes my life easier by keeping my camera close to my hand all the time.Felipe Tofani's Photography EDC I love it and I wish I saw more people using something like this around.
  6. We were in Barcelona a few years ago and I saw this small analog camera for sale in a shop. I bought it as a gift to Marcela but I don’t think I ever let her use it. My bad. This camera is called Black Mountain and it takes pictures in a square format, splitting the film you’d normally use in two. So, if you buy a 36 pictures film, this camera will turn it into 72 pictures. I normally carry it around for special moments since I still not sure how to handle film cameras that well.
  7. When I’m taking pictures with my Canon, I use this 50mm lens.Felipe Tofani's Photography EDC This lens is sharp, has almost no distortion and it takes great pictures when there is little light. This lens is not the most versatile one but I don’t worry that much about it since I carry different cameras for different things. Normally I use this for pictures of details in churches and other sights. It also works really well for portraits.
  8. I started using this Canon 7D a little over a year ago and I still have a lot to learn. But I have to say that I love this camera and I try to carry it with me most of the times.Felipe Tofani's Photography EDC It helps me in trying to see things in a different way and it makes me keep practicing and getting better and better. The Canon 7D is an amazing camera, fulfill all the needs I have in videos and photography. If you are looking for a great camera, this might be the way to go.
  9. Most people don’t get why I do carry a flashlight with me most of the times. I bought this EasyAcc flashlight a while ago to use it on my bike and I realized later how great it is to carry a flashlight around you when it is winter time and the sun sets around 16:00.Felipe Tofani's Photography EDC This flashlight is powerful and small and I even use to add some light to a night shot. This is something most people don’t think about but I love carrying this around.
  10. I believe this Joby Gorillapod was the first thing I bought after i got my Sony Action Camera. This small tripod is small in size but it does everything you need.Felipe Tofani's Photography EDC Too bad it doesn’t stand that might weight or I could use it on my Canon camera as well. Normally i use it on the ground when I want to take long exposures or when I trying my luck around a time-lapse. This tripod is versatile and it is great for mobile photography as well. If you get one, I promise you you won’t regret it.
  11. The second thing I bought when I got my Sony Action Camera was this Cullman’s monopod. Different from other monopods and selfie sticks, this monopod is strong and stable and it is perfect to carry around since it is really light.Felipe Tofani's Photography EDC The only problem I had with it was the poor quality of the ball head to attach the camera. I had a issue with it when it broke down in Finland and made my Action Camera sink into the sea. After that I got a Grifiti Nootle D-Ring Mini Ball Head that is amazing. It is heavy, stable and really well made.Felipe Tofani's Photography EDC Together with the Cullman’s monopod it takes care of most of the things I need when it comes to mobile photography.

So, I already talked about most of the gear I carry in my bag but there is more. Below you can see my photography EDC focused on what I use with my Sony Action Camera and my iPhone.

  1. But lets start with something a little bit different. These orange things above are the famous Nite Ize Gear Tie. I carry both of them with me all the time since they are really versatile.Felipe Tofani's Photography EDC I have used them to keep my jacket attached to my backpack, I have used them to hold my monopod to a tree and I have used them to hold my charging cables together. This is really useful and Marcela loves it so much she decided to nickname them MacGruber, the sketch from Saturday Night Live that mocks the 80s show McGiver.
  2. A negative point of my Sony Action Camera is that you can’t see what the camera is filming since it doesn’t have a proper display. To fix that I got this live-view remote control that can control up to six Sony Action Cameras at the same time. From it you can control if you want to take continuous pictures, record a movie or just a picture. It is waterproof and it is pretty fast. I take it everywhere.
  3. A while ago I decided to see how could I attach my camera to my bike and I ended up buying this and I really happy I did. This small mobile support is made for the Sony Action Camera but it works with every other camera. It comes with two straps of different sizes that allow you to attach this to objects of different sizes.Felipe Tofani's Photography EDC From my helmet to the fork of my bike, I have used this everywhere and I love it.
  4. Whenever Fotostrasse is traveling around, Marcela is taking pictures and I’m doing some movies with my Sony Action Camera. I really love the fisheye lenses it has and the unique way it produces films and pictures. Most people that see me with it asks me why I didn’t get a GoPro and I always point it out to a video review I saw a while ago with a GoPro and a Sony Action Camera side by side. Sony makes the best action cameras around and you should listen to me on this.
  5. This is the last accessory I got for the Action Camera. This small clamp is perfect to attach a camera to your backpack and let you use your hands without worrying about anything. I use it to keep filming when I want to use my camera to take pictures.Felipe Tofani's Photography EDC
  6. When it comes to mobile photography, I’m a iPhone kind of guy. It all started in 2009 and I keep buying them to now. The one I have now is the iPhone 6 Plus that I got in early 2015 and it is an amazing cellphone to take pictures and videos.Felipe Tofani's Photography EDC The battery lasts for a long time and there are a lot of really cool apps for it that we wrote about a while ago.
  7. Sometimes I want to attach my iPhone to a tripod and I use a Glif for it. This is the second model I have and I love this. Glif is strong, it holds your phone in place and you can change its attachment to different phones easily.Felipe Tofani's Photography EDC I even use to keep my cellphone standing up when I need to see a video on it. Get it now without thinking twice. It is more than worth it.
  8. Like I said before, I carry pens with me all the time and the ones I chose to carry are the versatile Sharpies.Felipe Tofani's Photography EDC One in black and other in red. You never know when you’re going to need one!

Yes, that was it. Above it is pretty much what I carry on my bag every time I’m taking pictures and shooting movies in Berlin or when Fotostrasse is traveling. But there are somethings I carry in my pocket that might be interesting as well.

Let me show you what I keep there.

  1. First things first, I have this small Nite Ize multitool with a small screwdriver and a few other tools but I mostly use it to open beer bottles.Felipe Tofani's Photography EDC This small keychain multitool has a lot to offer and i love it.
  2. On my keychain you can also find this Nomadkey USB to Lightning cable.Felipe Tofani's Photography EDC This ultra-compact, durable and flexible cable goes with me everywhere and it is the best thing to have around you when your iPhone needs some charging.
  3. The last thing I added to my keychain is called Beerhunter. And it is bottle opener that comes with a lock knife with a 3cm long blade that can be opened with just one hand. It is small, durable and looks pretty cool.Felipe Tofani's Photography EDC
  4. I almost forgot it but my keychain is the cool looking white Lego Stormtrooper that you can see in the picture above. I love it.- Felipe Tofani's Photography EDC

Marcela says I’m obsessed with backpacks and bags in general. I say that I’m not but I believe I care too much about this by now. I care so much that I have more than one bag for different things. Yes, I’m that kind of guy. Also, I’m the kind of guy that avoids having camera bags since they are kind of easy to spot around and growing up in Brazil taught me that this is the easiest way to get robbed.

Photography EDC – Different bags for different things

Below you can see what I carry with me depending of what, where and how we are going somewhere.

  1. The first backpack is this US Assault Pack with one strap. It can easily fit an iPad, my Canon 7D, the small pouches I mentioned above and a few other things.Felipe Tofani's Photography EDC Whenever I know I don’t need to carry a lot of things and that I won’t be out for long, I carry this one. It is easy to pack, easy to handle and to find anything you need and it is perfect for an afternoon trip in the city.
  2. The second bag I have here is more like a fanny pack than anything else but I don’t think I ever used it like that.Felipe Tofani's Photography EDC Normally I use this one whenever we are out by bike since I can attach it to the front of it and have easy access to my camera, my cellphone and everything else I might need. It has a lot of small pockets where you can carry pretty much anything.
  3. The third one is the smallest of the bags I have and tend to use it when I don’t plan to carry anything but my cameras and an external battery for them. This chest one strap bag is strong and really good to carry around when I know I won’t need to carry much. I often find myself with it on short day trips around Berlin and for urban exploration.

Ah, it seems that I forgot to mention what is my main bag. The one that can fit everything that I mentioned here.

Photography EDC – My bag of choice to carry all of this

My bag of choice it the Large Messenger Bag from Baicyclon. They are made in Berlin and they are huge. So huge that I can do my IKEA shopping with just it and it fits everything. I bought it for some reasons and the main one is that it is the only bag I found that can carry my huge 17” Macbook Pro. The bag looks really cool, is waterproof and is made of Cordura so you know it may last forever. If you want something smaller, their Medium Messenger Bag might be what you are looking forFelipe Tofani's Photography EDC.

The cat on the picture above doesn’t travel with us!
