Inside Out Project Berlin

A street art project to show Berlin's diversity through photography
In September 2022, we went to Urban Nation to participate in JR’s Berlin version of the Inside Out Project. The goal was to display the diversity of the German capital, and we thought it would be exciting to take part.

The Inside Out Project was created by the french artist JR to give communities a face through the faces of everyone that takes part in it. The project aims to initiate global change locally with large-format black-and-white portraits of community members. Together, they create a unique work of art that reflects a neighborhood.

In the last ten years, the Inside Out Project visited 138 countries and took pictures of more than 400 thousand people. Here in Berlin, over three hundred and thirty people took part in the action, and you can see what it looks like in the pictures here and on sight at Mehringdamm 8 – 12.

During the weekend, we went to Urban Nation to get our pictures taken at two different moments. Marcela came first on Saturday, and Camila and I went there on Sunday. For us, it was an inspiring experience.

First, you register, so the Inside Out Project has no copyright issues. A moment after this is done, you sit inside a truck designed to look like a massive film camera. There, our picture was taken, and a poster was printed almost instantly!

After our pictures were taken and the poster was ready, everything was taken to Mehringdamm, where a live-pasting join-in action took place. We got there right at the end and spent some time watching the walls get covered with the diversity that Berlin offers.

Inside Out Berlin took place in September 2022, and you can see the diversity that represents Berlin all over the walls of Mehringdamm 8 – 12. Inside Urban Nation, you can see a smaller sample of it as a part of Faces of Community.
