The Enigmatic Journey of Potsdam’s Lenin Statue

The Lenin statue in the Potsdam Volkspark seems to have secretly come to its location. Nobody knows what happened here, but there is a massive Lenin bust sitting peacefully in one of the largest parks in Potsdam.

Nobody voted for it to be there; the people who care for parks didn’t do it, but it is there now.

This Lenin statue used to stand somewhere else. It could be found in the military complex at Bornstedter Feld in Potsdam. When the Soviet army left Germany in 1994, the statue was left behind. Maybe it was the size; perhaps it was the weight. We can never be sure about it.

According to Lenin Still Around, back in the early 2000s, there was an exhibition at the Volkspark Potsdam. This Lenin statue was one of the pieces chosen to be part of it. Due to that, this statue was placed in the park from 2001 to 2005, together with other pieces of history.

After the end of the exhibition, all the pieces were removed from the park, but the Lenin statue you can see in the pictures stayed back one more time. The bust of the Soviet Union founder was moved to another location inside the park, but it remained there. In 2007, due to some construction work, the piece moved to a different location, next to one of the main park entrances. And this is when visitors started noticing its presence.

We cannot understand why this Lenin statue was left behind in the Volkspark Potsdam. We are not even sure why it’s still there, but on a hot summer afternoon in 2020, we took our cameras to Potsdam, and this was one of the places we visited.

We were surprised to see how easy it is to find the statue and how close it is to a playground. Some of us even used it as a climbing rock, but nobody needs to see these pictures.
