UPDATE: THIS PLACE IS NOW CLOSED AND A NEW ARIRANG HAS OPENED IN F-HAIN. HERE’S OUR POST ABOUT IT.
Sometime ago, we decided that we were in Wedding and, finally, try Arirang. We found out about this place a while ago but, it is not that often that we found ourselves going through the north part of Berlin. So, it took a while to try how different north korean food tastes. And it was worth it since, at least one of us, really enjoyed the place.
But, first things first, what is north korean food? And, second, how can it be that we have a north korean restaurant here in Berlin? We cannot answer those two questions but we can say that the food there tasted a lot like chinese food. But, a lot better.
The picture above is from Zelpan Oli that we choose based on the number of positive comments on foursquare. Like most times, those comments were right on the spot and that was one of the best ducks we ever had in our life. We can still remembered how good it tasted and how much better it got when we mixed it with the rice. We could have it again now. Really, writing this made us hungry all over again. The only disappointing thing there was that we were looking forward to find a north korean beer and we didn’t find anything. And, the one we tried was south korean and it was just ok.
We also had Dolsot-Bibimbab that looks really interesting with rice, a fried egg, some vegetables and meat. It looked like something we have in Brazil but we could never explain it here in words. Sorry. We can say that this rice was one of the best dishes we ever tried from that side of the world and we are crazy about the east.
Something that caught our eye while we were there is how rustic and simple the place looked like. Nothing fancy, no hype and we picture it how it must be to live inside a communist dictatorship even though we have no idea about how this could be. The service was typical Berlin with a twist since our broken down german was as bad as theirs. If we spoke korean, it would make things better, maybe.
You can find Arirang at Seestraße,106 in Berlin-Wedding. It is open daily from 12:00 to 23:00, it isn’t open on tuesday and they don’t have a website.
