Panoramapunkt

A visit to the viewing platform on Potsdamer Platz
Panoramapunkt is one of the best places to see Berlin from above and the perfect place to see what Potsdamer Platz looks like from the top. It has an exciting view of the main tourists spots in Berlin, and you have to go there to see them and take all the pictures you can.
We visited the Panoramapunkt in March 2022, and all the pictures here are from this visit. We have been planning to spend some time there for quite a while now. First, we didn’t go there because we were just lazy. Later, the COVID19 pandemic ruined our plans, but… We managed to find our way there, and it was more than worth it.

The Panoramapunkt is a viewing platform right above Potsdamer Platz, the 25th floor of Kollhoff-Tower. This is one of the tallest buildings in Berlin, and it bears the name of Berlin architect Hans Kollhoff. He was one of the designers responsible for the new Potsdamer Platz built after the fall of the Berlin Wall and the reunification of the country.

The Kollhoff-Tower is the brick building you can see when you go to Potsdamer Platz. It was completed back in 1999, and it’s part of the Quartier Potsdamer Platz together with the Sony Center and the DB Tower. Both buildings are easy to spot from the Panoramapunkt and are the perfect location to see how the Sony Center was designed to resemble Mount Fuji in Japan.

But before you arrive at the Panoramapunkt, you have to go through the fastest lift in Europe. It’s so fast that you can feel it moving all around you and, in less than 20 seconds, you will be 100 meters above the ground on Potsdamer Platz.

From the top, you have a fantastic view of many of Berlin's most famous tourist spots. The TV Tower can be seen in the distance and all the beautiful buildings around the Berliner Dom on Museum Island. On the other side, you can see Tiergarten with the Victory Column in the middle of a sea of green trees. Turn your camera to the other side, and you will be faced with a panoramic view of Kreuzberg at an angle that is rarely seen anywhere else in Berlin.

But there is more than just a fantastic panoramic view up there on Panoramapunkt. If you look in the other direction, you can see an open-air exhibition with the history of Potsdamer Platz. Images show how the area looked before the Second World War, how it changed entirely during the Berlin Wall years, and rebuilt in the 1990s.

Besides the gorgeous view of the open-air exhibition, there is a panorama café on top of the Kollhoff-Tower. The terrace allows you to sit and watch the city below you in elegant style. The glass windows are a perfect shelter from the winds on top of the building and are great for those who just want to sit down and enjoy the view.

When we visited the Panoramapunkt, we took the last available time slot since we wanted to see a sunset from the top of Berlin. The pictures we took were all beautiful, and we know that we will need to bring some of our friends there. We loved the time we spent there.
