Halle Neustadt was one of the first attempts from East Germany on planning a new city from scratch. They wanted to create a utopic place with equal conditions for everyone. To make the site more vibrant and colourful, artworks were spread all around the area, and we are here to show you these socialist murals of Halle Neustadt.

The Löffelfamilie is how this neon sign has been known to everyone in Leipzig since it was first lightened up in 1973. The non-official name can be translated as the Spoon Family. It is the only neon sign from East Germany that we ever saw, still standing in public like this.

Checkpoint Bravo was the name of one of three Allied checkpoints used by the United States in the divided Germany and Berlin during the years after the Second World War and the Fall of the Berlin Wall. Before 1969, this Checkpoint could be found on a bridge over the Teltow Canal. Still, it was moved to a different location called Albrechts Teerofen. In here, we will be talking about the original and abandoned Checkpoint Bravo.

Back in 1988, one year before the fall of the Berlin Wall, Tilda Swinton took her bike and cycled around the Berlin Wall, together with the filmmaker Cynthia Beatt. What they created came to be known as Cycling the Frame, and it’s a beautiful and surreal document that shows a city scarred by a wall that cut it in half.
