We went to the Typopassage Vienna when we visited the city back in August. The place is also called the Micro Museum for the Design of and with Typography and we can easily say it was the greatest micro museum we have ever been to.

Visiting the Typopassage Vienna

As a designer, it is easy for me to say that most people take typography for granted as one of the most important cultural media of our world. If you think about it, this should be more than enough reason to devote a museum to typography. Under the direction of Erwin K. Bauer, a series of exhibitions showing contemporary typography takes place the at Typopassage Vienna. With easy exhibition a publication will be available on a vending machine for anyone that would like to own a piece of it.

One thing that we know you will pay attention here is the ceiling configuration designed by the great spanish designer Alex Trochut, whose work mix illustration and typography. Inspired by Frederico García Lorca’s poem Pequeños Vals Vienés and the adaptation from Leonard Cohen, Take This Waltz; the designer created a beautiful camouflage pattern. Sometimes, it is easier to understand and see the work from a distance.

We manage to get the two of this publications, #7 and #8. Number #7 is a series of typographic postcards with ancient writing of dairy products from the Austrian Alps. They are beautifully done and show the care people had with this kind of labels. Number #8 is completely different and comes with a neon acrylic template that is ideal for creative experiment and will help you out creating your own characters. If you manage to create something cool, you can even upload them to Typopassage Vienna website and share them with the world.

The Typopassage Vienna is a small part of the huge museum complex know as Museumsquartier but we only went there to see this new type of place. And we can say it was worth it. If you are a designer or care about type and is visiting Vienna, Typopassage Vienna must be one of your places to go in this beautiful city. We are sure that you will love it.

Typopassage Vienna can be found inside the Museumsquartier in Vienna and it is open 24 hours a day, every week of the year. You can buy the publications all year round on the vintage looking machine close by. Enjoy it!
