When I visited Kaliningrad, at the end of October 2017, I wanted to explore the nightlife of the city and see how is the beer scene in this piece of Russia. The best place I found was the fantastic Yeltsin Bar where the best craft beer can be located.
I went to Yeltsin Bar after exploring the city by foot for the entire day. I had dinner before I got there so food wasn’t on my mind, but I wanted to taste some Russian craft beer. Mostly because some of my Russian co-workers mentioned how Kaliningrad is considered by some as the beer capital of Russia!
It all goes down to the city past. When Kaliningrad was still called Königsberg, everyone in the town drank beer. From children to women and men and it was so famous and popular that it was added to dough and stew and soups. This is how Prussia used to be, and many local pubs and bars still have this tradition.
Yeltsin Bar is one of these places and, there, you will find the most extensive selection of Russian craft beers in Kaliningrad. There are more than 15 different ones from the tap, and there are, at least, two fridges filled with more beers. Most of them are from Kaliningrad, but there are a lot of them from Russia, Lithuania and the area around.
You can find the Yeltsin Bar a little more than 5 minutes walking away from the Victory Square, in the middle of Kaliningrad. Go there and try out some of their craft beers! If you don’t know what to choose, ask around because the staff helped me out. And everybody spoke English! Don’t be afraid and just enjoy it.
You can take your dog there, drink inside or outside in their beer garden or take some of their tap beer home with you. Take a look at their Instagram and Facebook to see which beers to they have when you’re visiting Kaliningrad.
